Challenging, otherworldly and almost indescribably beautiful, Phaedra exerted a massive influence on ambient and electronic artists for decades after its release.

“Phaedra was recorded under extremely trying circumstances ('Technically, everything that could go wrong did go wrong,' TD founder Edgar Froese later recalled), the results were stunning, especially the 17-minute headtrip title cut, which layered an accidentally recorded Moog synth track with flute, Mellotron, bass sequencer and white noise - an additional sense of interstellar drift was created by the Moog's oscillators, which lost their tuning as the machine heated up. She committed suicide after her stepson refused her advances. The title originates from the Greek myth of Phaedra, the daughter of Minos and Ariadne's sister. It was recorded during November 1973 at The Manor in Shipton-on-Cherwell, England and released on 20 February 1974 through Virgin Records. 'This is the first Tangerine Dream album to feature their now classic sequencer-driven sound, which later became known as their trademark and of the so called Berlin School genre. Phaedra is a music studio album recording by TANGERINE DREAM (Progressive Electronic/Progressive Rock) released in 1974 on cd, lp / vinyl and/or cassette. Plain paper inners came later with a variety of other label designs. UK original issues came in a red printed poly-paper inner sleeve (at first) and then a black printed inner sleeve, with the Virgin Records logo and Vernon Street address (some later inners didn't have the address). A black & white version exists in Germany, and in the UK apparently only as a 'promotion - not for sale' issue. The UK original issue of this was on the Roger Dean designed ('Gemini' and lizard, Virgin logo) colour label.
